Creating a marketplace and community around small scale growers
At Driftime, we held an annual hackathon to explore new product ideas and turn them into fully-fledged prototypes. My idea this year was a marketplace app where small-scale growers—those with allotments, gardens, or balcony setups—could offer surplus fruit and veg to their local community. The goal was to address two problems: 1) Food waste—when growers end up with more than they can eat, they can sell the excess to neighbours at a modest price. 2) Limited access to fresh produce—inner city residents could use the app to find affordable, local fruit and veg right on their doorstep. I worked with the wider team for the UX design and lead the UI design of the app. Additionally I helped with the branding and animation for marketing materials.
App design
We wanted the app to have a fresh, friendly aesthetic. Highly functional and simple to use, while at the same time playful and fun. A key consideration was the audience we were designing for, a broad spectrum of ages and technical literacy.
Brand
Similarly, the branding aimed to be friendly and colourful, heroing high quality photography and snappy, funny headlines. We developed a tone of voice and visual language. I used this to create a range of mock-ups for posters, stickers and badges as well as a marketing animation focusing on the copywriting.
