Fighting the misuse of artistic work as courtroom evidence
Art Not Evidence is a campaign fighting against the injustice of using creative expression as legal evidence in court. Young black men are being sent to prison after prosecutors are using their rap lyrics as evidence against them. I worked on brand development, poster and animation designs to be used by the campaign to raise awareness. Since launch, the campaign has been featured in The Guardian, Rolling Stone UK, NME, Dazed and The Times.
Brand development
I helped evolve the brand’s redaction concept into a clear visual language – using tape to suggest urgency and tension against precise typography. Portraits referenced prison photography but focused on human presence and individuality, conveyed through the eyes. I then used animation to create simple and effective typographic cycling, to underpin the meaning of the Art Not Evidence slogan.
